Red Rump Parrot – Psephotus Haematonotus
The Red Rump parrot makes a great pet. Technically these are parakeets. They are very endearing to their owners. The red rump needs to be handled on a daily basis to maintain its tame and friendly demeanour. It is possible to train them to step up and to talk. They are not renowned for their ability to talk but with patience and perseverance they can be trained to talk.
The Red Rump is a native of Australia and belong to what is commonly known as the parakeet family. They are happy go lucky characters and enjoy life to the full. If there is a water bath in their cage they will spend a great deal of time enjoying bathing and soaking everyone nearby.
One of the Red Rump's pleasures is eating. They enjoy a diet of seed mix which usually consists of high quality seeds from Australian plants and trees. Also, they are well known for their enjoyment of vegetables. They will eat broccoli, carrots, kale, peas and corn. A limited amount of fatty seed is good for their diet. Sunflower seeds are an example of the fatty seeds that should be given in limited amounts.
The playful Red Rump will enjoy cage toys such as swings and perches of varying sizes from which the bird can hang or climb.
These lovely creatures are birds that, given the correct treatment, can live for some 15 to 20 years. It is a caring environment that makes any bird happy and it is the owners responsibility to ensure that their bird's welfare is paramount.
Owners, I am sure will be well aware that you should never house two male birds together as this will lead avian warfare. Adult males will become very aggressive and almost certainly attempt to kill each other. Red Rumps are also intolerant of other species and do not happily share their surroundings with others.
