Scarlet Macaw(Ava macao)
The most popular Macaw is probably the Scarlet Macaw which has a bright coloured plumage consisting of deep red to the body and yellow to the wings and shoulders. The primary tail feathers are blue, the greater wing and shoulder feathers are yellow and the underside of the wings are reddish brown. The lower back and rump are light blue. The eyes are yellow, and the Scarlet Macaw has a pale upper mandible with black base and lower mandible black.
The female Scarlet Macaw is smaller in the body than the male. Also, it has a beak which is much shorter and broader than the male.
The natural habitat for the Scarlet Macaw is Southern Mexico and Central America. The Scarlet Macaw is more widely distributed than any other of the Macaw species.
The Scarlet Macaw lives on a diet of fruit (oranges and bananas), nuts, berries, sunflower seeds, carrots, calcium (cuttlefish bone), tomatoes, bread, fresh twigs, fresh corn on the cob.
The Scarlet Macaw will need natural branches in its cage which must be very large to allow the bird to stretch its wings. A large T stand should be provided alongside the cage to allow the Scarlet Macaw to perch in apparent freedom.
The Scarlet Macaw is a social bird by nature and very affectionate towards its keeper, but they can be noisy when frustrated or bored. To get attention the Scarlet Macaw will screech.
The Scarlet Macaw likes to bathe so it must have access to plenty of water. A large bowl of water should be placed in the cage away from the drinking water to allow the bird to bathe as and when it feels the need.
