Grand Electus - (Electus Roratus)

This is a very interesting species of parrot because the colours of the male and female are so very different. This obviously helps with the sexing of the young birds. The male Grand Electus is mostly green coloured whilst the female is a bright red with a rich blue to rump and lower body. The female's beak is generally black, both upper and lower mandibles, whereas the male bird, has a coral upper mandible with a yellow tip and a lower mandible which is black.
The Grand Electus likes to live in a warm environment. This means that the aviary should be kept at a round 22 degrees centigrade or, if kept indoors in a cage, this must be in a warm area of the house.
These birds grow to approximately 35 to 38 cms and will need a cage at least 45 by 45 cms plan area.
The Grand Electus needs access to fresh water. It should have normal drinking water available at all times and another larger bowl of fresh water in its cage so that it may bathe as frequently as it wishes.
The diet for the Grand Electus should be rich in vitamin A as this bird has a high requirement for this vitamin. It will feed on cooked rice, millet, sunflower seeds, carrots, peas, celery, tomatoes, berries, dandelions, lettuce, fruit and pinenuts.
You can train your Grand Electus in the same way as you would any other parrot. They can be very good talkers if you are patient and take the time to teach your bird.
